SW COLORADO, ST. ELMO TO TIN CUP

We return to St. Elmo and rent an ATV to go over Tin Cup Pass (12,154 ft.) It's six miles up over a fairly good jeep trail. There are many beautiful wilderness campsites along the way. We see several yellow-bellied marmots; they bark at us like they're irritated. The pass is well above timberline and pretty chilly.  It's seven miles down the other side to the town of Tin Cup. This mining town got its name from the first fellow who set up a saloon here. He used a plank between two tree stumps for a bar and the miners would bring their tin cups to be served. The trail is extremely rough and it takes us 2 hours to go seven miles. We lunch at Frenchy's and then visit the cemetery. It is divided up by religion. The return trip is just as rough, but we get the 4-wheeler back by 5:00 PM. Back at camp we have a snack and go to bed before dark.
