SW COLORADO, DURANGO TO SILVERTON

We return to Durango to tour the train yard, roundhouse, machine shop and museum. We motor tour old town and marvel at the big old Victorian homes. We find a put-in on the Animas River where the dogs can take a swim. We go up the million dollar highway toward Silverton. It's called the million dollar highway not because of how much it cost to build but because they destroyed a million dollars worth of gold building it. This road has very few guard rails but plenty of sharp curves and steep grades. Silverton was a high mountain mining town (9,305 feet) that has survived the decline of mining. The D&SRR transitioned from carrying ore to carrying tourists. We take a site in town at Red Mountain Campground and unpack the bicycles. We cruise up town for a steak dinner at Grumpys and then coast back to the motor home to do some electronic processing.
Spectacular views.

Another beautiful vista.
