As we travel inland the landscape becomes hilly and the Santiago Mountains come into view. The chalk colored hills give way to cliffs and ledges. We cross the Pecos River where the canyon walls are steep and sheer.
The road leaves the Rio Grande canyon and is unencumbered by gas stations and fast food restaurants for 150 miles. I'm glad we have a 50 gallon gas tank. We have fun with a clump of mistletoe before we turn off to go into Big Bend National Park. We arrive at a campsite just after dark.
