FORT SUMNER, NEW MEXICO

After a Ihop breakfast, we continue SW. We visit the grave of Billy the Kid and the accompanying museum. Afterward we rename Cache la Poudre to Pooder the Kid. We watch the pink sun go down as we are touring the Bosque Redondon on the Pecos river. This is at fort Sumner where the U.S. government drove the Navajo on their Long Walk from the Four Corners area in 1862. The Mescalero Apache were forced here too under the Manifest Destiny doctrine. The attempt to turn all these Indians into farmers was a grand failure. Finally in 1868 they were allowed to return to their homelands.

We head south to Roswell but don't see any UFOs. We park at Home Depot next to Ihop.  There is about 10" of new snow on the ground and things are starting to freeze up. We see lots of black ice forming. We are told this is an unusually cold winter here so far.
