It got down to 20 degrees last night so we had to use the furnace and pile on extra blankets. We head west to Cheyenne and let the dogs run free at the town park. We visit the Black Kettle museum and learn about the Washita massacre. George Custer and his 7th Cavalry attacked the village of Black Kettle, who was a peace chief, on November 27, 1868. Black Kettle was killed and his village destroyed.
We visit the battlefield historic site and hike down to the Washita river where they were camped the morning of the attack. Many brightly colored prayer cloths are hung in the trees beside the creek. Even though it's not allowed, we take the dogs with us because we are the only ones here. Their romp is hampered by sand burs in their paws. We have Mexican food in Cheyenne and return to the Washita historic site for the night.
